Twitch & I

Throughout my time as a Product Designer I & II at Twitch, I designed through a lens of equity, transparency, and accessibility, and built spaces to help creators understand their journey more deeply through data. In a macro context, I was responsible for maintaining and bolstering the entire creator experience on Twitch, including dozens of spaces and toolsets, while ensuring a navigable, intuitive, and empowering experience for all creators.

I started my tenure at Twitch designing internal tools for our various teams, including dashboards and control panels for our former Curse holdings, as well as a premium content CMS for our internal teams and 3rd-party partners called Atlas. The past few years have afforded me the incredible opportunity to focus on the creator experience at Twitch, where I engage creators and their communities to empower them in their quest for growth on this unique platform in whatever way they define that. In this vein, VOD Tool and Category Suggestions were both highly collaborative efforts with creators to pinpoint their needs and frustrations and solve for each.

As a platform, Twitch has always resonated deeply with my core; I am a gamer through and through, someone who strives to build community wherever they are, and a storyteller at heart. Twitch enables all creators to tell their own stories through a shared love with their communities, whether that be gaming, art, or simply just chatting. Looking for a place that just ‘gets’ you? You’ll find it on Twitch!

Case Studies

Below are a few key projects I’ve led during my time at Twitch. Each of these projects has seen a full release, and are currently developing further through an iterative design cycle. Take a look to see a glimpse into my design process at Twitch!

VOD Tool

Twitch’s VOD Tool is the first step towards a solution for a common problem faced by creators on Twitch - we serve creators various performance metrics for each of their streams, but stop short of providing context on why these metrics are important.

Category Suggestions

Up-and-coming creators on Twitch struggle when deciding on what content to stream - they want to stream games they enjoy, but also games that will help them grow a community of viewers. Category Suggestions helps change that.

Atlas

Atlas provided 3rd-party partners reliable targeting for all activations on Twitch through Partnerships, and accurate first-party reporting on their various campaigns on Twitch. Need creators with exactly 22 average viewers who love popcorn? Atlas has you covered!

Other Projects - Creator Dashboard

So, what exactly does the creator experience on Twitch look like? The Creator Dashboard alone houses 25 pages of content, including Insights, the Streamer Survey, and Creator Home. Let’s take a look!

Insights

Channel Analytics
The workhorse of insights that includes an interchangeable graph of 19 metrics over any user-controlled time period, revenue stream breakdowns, clip and VOD tables, notification performance, and so much more. This page focuses on channel-wide, aggregate data for the creator.

Stream Summary
A dynamic breakdown of each of the creator’s stream sessions, giving them an analytics play-by-play of that session’s wins and areas of improvement.

Achievements
When a creator wants to see progress towards specific monetization or channel status goals, or wants to celebrate some recent wins in those areas, Achievements has them covered.

Streamer Community Survey

This survey was born out of a need for greater equity and representation on our platform. Content in our Browse section was commonly referred to as a “popularity contest” as it was ranked by view counts - many creators saw this as a ‘the rich get richer’ system, so we set out to truly understand our creators in order to better feature their diversity on the platform.

This product is a simple survey on the front-end, but was a incredible feat in building and maintaining user trust, creating a transparent and robust data policy, and direct collaboration with our creators. Day 1 of release saw a staggering 52% response rate, and it has since been used to power various activations on Twitch that celebrate our diverse creators and their stories.

Creator Home

Creator Home is an ongoing project to consolidate the different workflows for creators into a dynamic, educational space. It’s a great jumping-off point for almost every product on Twitch, and helps creators navigate their most important focus areas as their career involves through an intuitive and simple interface.

A true ‘home base’ for creators, the experience continues to transform to include new products, features, and a more dynamic system that accounts for a user’s channel status as they grow. It’s also a great place for creators to spend some downtime with various networking and educational features.
